I think there’s room for an interesting (and respectful) conversation about the role of intercessory prayer in people’s lives, and how intercessory prayer can interact in healthy (and unhealthy) ways with those affected by chronic illness or congenital conditions.

I’m not sure this is the right vehicle for that conversation. But what I AM sure of, is that a hotel swimming pool is definitely not the right place for that!

What strikes me most about this incident is that the lifeguard was really well-intentioned, and probably thought she was witnessing her faith. But because of her misunderstanding / insensitivity / poorly chosen context, she wound up sending a very negative message about her faith instead.

First, let me say I love Jesus. I’m a Christ follower. I’m just a sinner saved by the grace of almighty Creator God throught the blood of his Son Jesus, the Christ. Having said that, let me comment on the lifeguard’s comment: hogwash! It just burns my fanny when someone throws around the term “Christian” like that. Excuse me, lifeguard woman, but please DO NOT lump us all in the same lot! grrrrrr I’m sorry you were subjected to such ignorant babbling.

I am so sorry you were lectured by someone with an incorrect interpretation of the bible. As a Pastor, with EHK, I would have LOVED to be there with you. That’s the kind of conversations I have fun engaging in. Biblically the practice if speaking in tongues has one, and only one, purpose. Speaking in tongues is for the common good of the body of Christ –not for the good of the one who has the gift. God is not a genie in a bottle waiting to grant our wishes. If you pray the right way God will not magically pass your test. God is good and loving and he wants good for all of us. Unfortunately, we live in a jacked up sinful world. I will step down off my soap box. Hey wanna go swimming at a hotel?

I will share another side of the “religious” argument for why our children are affected. No, I don’t believe this either. I was told that God said, “That mother can handle this. Give her this child with special needs. The mother is an angel.” Or something like that. I can’t believe that God would purposefully give children any sort of disorder….I have always been amazed at the comments people will make, who don’t know anything about it.

I’ve had that. Sad to hear you got it too. My parents got a lot of it when I was a child because apparently they didn’t have enough faith, because if they did I would have been healed. Devout prominent members of the city’s Christian community…but they had something wrong with their faith. Thankfully they made most of the people around me NOT do that by the time I was old enough to understand and told me how to respond when they tried it on me.

I just smile and say thankyou and go somewhere else. If they offer to pray for me I usually politely decline and run away!

The nerve of some people is just horrifying. Sorry that happened to you and your family. Though I guess, like with the shitty situations that happen to me, it makes for writing fodder.

I’ve recently seen two films about skin conditions in second and third world countries – there was a great focus on spiritual guilt and stigma surrounding the conditions. I’ll get the names of the films for you.
